The pollen was thick and the air dry and hot on race day. Andrea suffered breathing difficulties due to allergies early on in the swim which hampered her performance throughout the day, but showed her class to still come in 9th place. For Andrea, she just wanted to keep her stong form up. She managed to achieve this comfortably with a strong performance, coming in 15th. The race for Nicky was to beat a particular swiss athlete, in order to have more points than the swiss national team. Was a big race for Nicky, being our third ranked female athlete- we needed her to put in a strong performance to guarantee NZ three female spots at the Olympics. Saturday was race day, we had Andrea Hewitt and Nicky Samuels racing. We expect the All Blacks to win, so therefore an expectation is created and I question whether we ever enjoy the moment while watching the AB's play an important match, or if we are too worried about losing? Anyway, I enjoyed the constant song throughout the day, despite the language barrier. After being in the thick of the Rugby World Cup last year, I couldn't compare the atmosphere. There was a large screen set up in the middle of the city, with crowds for as far as you could see. A constant stream of red and white stripes entered the city over the course of the day. If you ever wanted to appreciate how big football is in Spain, this was a good time to witness it. While in Madrid, there was the final of the La Liga - Spanish national football competition. It has been interesting how many people have made mention of th article- been good profile! He seemed to enjoy having a yarn about the Naki etc, said he had seen my news article online. Greg introduced me to Jamie, who is a ex- Naki lad who now works for Triathlon Australia. We signed in, got our accreditation sorted and sat through briefing. Managed to get dropped off at the right hotel, despite my lack of spanish! Met up with Greg, our national coach and we headed to the race briefing in town. I always enjoy listening to experience, and Jon has plenty of that to share! I got to know him at the snow farm earlier in the year, and have looked after his athletes while they were at races in NZ and Australia. Jon is a dutch-turned kiwi GP and coach who used to be the national coach of NZ triathlon but is now coaching the up and coming dutch triathlon team. Had a good chat to renowned Dr Jon Hellemans on the way in. Was meant to meet up with Andrea and Laurent but their plane was delayed back in France. Once in Madrid, I met up with the Triathlon organisers who took me and a few of the international athletes to our hotels. Made it to Madrid after 30 hours or so, felt good, made sure I was well hydrated. ![]()
